Central Authentication Service

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Single sign-on (SSO)?

Single sign-on (SSO) is a method of access control that enables a user to log in once and gain access to the resources of multiple software systems without being prompted to log in again. Single sign-off is the reverse process whereby a single action of signing out terminates access to multiple software systems.

What is Central Authentication Service (CAS)?

The Central Authentication Service (CAS) is an authentication system originally created by Yale University to provide a trusted way for an application to authenticate a user.

CAS is a single sign-on protocol for the web. Its purpose is to permit a user to access multiple applications while providing their credentials (such as userid and password) only once.

Why should I close my browser when I am done?

Closing your browser is the easiest way to guarantee that the next user of a computer will not be surfing the web under your identity.

How the new my apps feature in the portal makes it easy to access your private single sign-on assets?

The new my apps icon consolidates your personal single sign-on connections into one easy to reach location on the portal header. The header is visible from all locations within the portal. All you need is one click on the my apps icon to display a customized list of all of your connections. You will not need to re-enter your credentials for any individual connection.

For now, the original single sign-on links in portal channels will not be disabled. Please continue to use the original single sign-on links whenever you need/want to. This activity will help us capture usage patterns. Over time, usage patterns will help Portal Council members decide whether to locate single sign-on connections in my apps or in channels. As new private assets are authenticated through the Central Authentication System (CAS) and integrated with my apps, you will have fewer login ID's and passwords to remember and manage.

What assets currently use CAS?

At the current time the following assets will use CAS:

  • The main portal
  • Guest Portal
  • Moodle Learning
  • Intranet Contents
  • OPPM
  • Ethics Forms
  • University ID
  • Portal channel management console
